PLEASE NOTE: While we encourage people to start arriving at 10:30 - to enjoy the vibes of the Koha Cafe and watch the ducks assemble in the water - the actual start of the duck race is scheduled for 11:00am. Please keep this in mind to avoid any disappointment! Two Duck Races in, and we're looking forward to making this fantastic event happen again!
...In 2023 and 2024, over 3000 hopeful bath ducks were launched on their way. Their mission: To race as fast as their wings could take them to the Puke Ariki Landing, encouraged on their journey by massive corporate ducks, swans, llamas and toucans, sponsored by businesses and organisations, proudly decorated with logos and costumes.
It all happens to support Taranaki Retreat, Waimanako, and Community Mental Health / Suicide Prevention for our people.
On February 22nd, we’ll be doing it all again! This year’s race will include - as our corporate sponsors - inflatable animal rings, which can be decorated and then sustainably repurposed for future races. The randomness of their presence will broadcast loud and clear one of our core kaupapa: no matter who you are, or how you look - you're in!
Trophies include Most Original Route, Last Across the Line, and, of course, the top prize of $250 for FASTEST DUCK!
Trophies for corporate 'ducks' include First Place, Best Dressed, and Really Gave a Duck!
How many will YOU sponsor?
The hopeful ducks will be cheered on their journey from the back deck of Waimanako, 33 Devon Street West, splashing in at 11am.

It's a thrilling partnership between Taranaki Retreat and Team Americarna. You don’t need to be there on the day; you don’t even need to be in the country - you’ll be able to watch the livestream of the event and cheer on your ducks, wherever you are in the world.
What you need to know:
Q: How many is the maximum I can sponsor?
A: 1,000 ducks is the max (why not sponsor one for everyone on your team?)
Q: What’s the cause?
A: Funding locally delivered therapeutic support for people going through tough times.
Q: What is Waimanako / Taranaki Retreat?
A: A Community Support Service, helping people through tough times, providing a Space to Gather and a Space to Breathe for our people.
Q: How can my business/organisation get involved?
A: Sponsor a Corporate inflatable - just $150. You get to decorate/dress your duck, and give it all the encouragement it needs before the event!
Q: Can I watch the ducks hit the water?
A: Absolutely! Head to Waimanako before 11am on Saturday 22nd February 2025, and follow their commentated progress along the Huatoki Stream to their destination: Puke Ariki Landing. Or watch our Livestream.
Q: Wait, does that mean the ducks will be swimming into the sea??!
A: Nope; a huge net across the stream at the finish-line, along with our team in kayaks, will keep every single duck safe and ready for the next time they race.
Q: This sounds awesome. How can I/we help?
A: We would love YOUR help getting this event out there. It’s going to be Quackers. We’d love you to:
- Tell EVERYONE about it – make sure we meet our target of 3,000+ mini ducks (alongside our corporate mega-participants)
- Sponsor a family of ducks and give it to someone you love as a gift (remember – they might win $250!!)
- Put up a poster in your workplace / community noticeboard / local shop, etc.
- Sponsor an individual duck for everyone in your workplace as a bonus
- Sponsor a Corporate Duck ($150) and get involved from your Business/ Zumba Group / Sports Team / Church / Craft Group
- Send the link to everyone on your Facebook/Instagram
- Come along on the day and see the spectacle first-hand :)
Q: How do I find out more?
A: Call 06 2150993 or email [email protected]
Q: How does Taranaki Retreat / Waimanako help people?
A: We asked a whānau in our care to answer this question. They said: 'Please get behind this. The team at Taranaki Retreat care so much for the community, and they receive no Government funding for what they do. With their help in 2022, we got through the toughest time in our lives; it was hell, they were always there for us.'
