About this Event

From Vicky Baker:

My talk is entitled The vocation of motherhood in a feminist age: A personal reflection and my discussion will centre around my own personal experience of giving up my career to essentially care for my child full-time. The discussion will raise such questions as – ‘Should feminism incorporate the voices of motherhood?’ and ‘In what ways can motherhood and feminism reconcile? I will discuss how, after a long journey, I have come to some personal reflections on these matters incorporating areas such as faith, vocation and self-esteem.

I lectured for a while before full time homeschooling my son, who suffers from a chronic medical condition. This shift in circumstances almost forced me to reevaluate my own self-esteem as a full-time mother who no longer has a career and has lost a certain amount of perceived status within society. As an academic, I was interested in diversity and inclusion – these same areas cropped up again when I was contemplating my talk – do I have a voice? And if so, what would I say?
