Are you curious about how technology is transforming the field of archaeology?Join us for a public lecture titled ‘The Use of GIS in Maltese Archaeology’, taking place at St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat on Saturday, 13th September, starting at 6:00pm. This interesting session will explore the growing use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a powerful digital tool that has become an integral part of modern archaeological practice.
The lecture will delve into how GIS and other digitally oriented methodologies, both hardware and software, are being applied not only for the documentation, protection, management, and promotion of archaeological sites, but also for their detection and identification. As part of this digital revolution, GIS has become an essential part of the archaeological workflow, offering innovative ways to carry out research and uncover new insights.
Focusing on the Maltese context, the session will highlight various GIS functionalities and how they are being applied locally, with different case studies demonstrating the diverse uses of this technology and the results it can yield. The lecture will conclude with an open discussion, providing attendees with the opportunity to ask questions and engage further with the topic.
A small coffee break will be offered at the end of the event. Attendance is against a €5 donation, with tickets available online here or physically at any Heritage Malta museum or site.
