Introduction to drawing the human figure from live models using a classical approach. Each class will focus on specific objectives: they include human anatomy, basic proportions, action lines, linear methods, tonal methods, and gesture drawing for depicting the human figure. Both quick poses and extended poses will be used. Each week will provide a different model. This course is approachable enough for beginners and detailed enough for advanced artists.
Class One: Sample work will be shared. A handout will be provided that investigates the human skeleton and human proportions. This will be compared to the model. A review of the concept of action lines (stick figure) will be the warm-up exercise. Daniel will demonstrate this process. The model will provide a series of quick two minute poses, which will serve as a warm-up exercises. Landmarks (centerline of the torso, tilt of the shoulders, alignment of elbows, knees) will be investigated through a longer 40 minute pose. This class will use various drawing pencils. Feedback throughout the class will be provided.
Class Two: The figure can be broken down into a series of oval shapes, this simplified form method will be used to build the various muscle masses of the body. Daniel will demonstrate this concept. The overall angles between the shoulders, the angles of the torso, and the angle of the pelvis will be explored through both short and long poses. This class will use white and black charcoal on toned paper. Feedback throughout class provided, group critiques.
Class Three: Gesture drawing will be introduced as a way to observe the model as a connected form and serve as a warm-up exercise. A series of short poses will be utilized to explore drawing loosely. This class will also introduce simplified values (shadow, middle tone, and highlight areas). Focus will be to accurately depict the human form in correct proportions, and strong tonal contrast. This class will use pastels on toned paper. Feedback throughout and final group critique.
