Since the discovery of coenzyme Q (ubiquinone/ubiquinol) since 1953 by Frederick L. Crane (1925-2016) continuous discoveries were published on the intracellular and extracellular locations, biosynthesis mechanisms and environment dependencies, antioxidant and respiratory functions, and supplementation benefits in multiple diseases and aging. However, discoveries are still happening and implicating coenzyme Q in the regulation of aged-associated cardiovascular diseases by its antioxidant protection through oxidoreduction reactions by extramitochondrial dehydrogenases, which also promote health and life span. Supplementation of coenzyme Q also promotes fertility in aging models, and skin protection and regeneration that open new clues in cosmetics. Coenzyme Q reaches another dimension when it was demonstrated its redox requirement for cancer growth, and pyrimidine biosynthesis coenzyme Q-dependent dihydroorotate dehydrogenase regulation of respiratory chain reorganization. Erythropoiesis has been recently demonstrated to depend on mitochondrial coenzyme Q. Since the first ICQA meeting in Ancona, we have seen the evolution of discoveries on the highly conserved and complex biosynthesis pathway in either procaryotes and eukaryotes, but still new genes and mechanisms are uncovered this 2022 meeting. From the beginning, the studies on coenzyme Q functions and biosynthesis run in parallel to its integration in respiratory chain, and particularly its incorporation as essential component of the respirasome, its role in responding to oxygen concentrations and the dependency of fuel components. All these aspects and others will be covered in these three days scientific meeting with invited speakers all-around the world.
