PBS North Carolina, River Run International Film Festival and ArtsAccess North Carolina proudly present a preview screening of curated clips from Independent Lens: The Tuba Thieves.
Join us for an accessible, in-person event that explores the question of sound and a hard-of-hearing form of storytelling in which information collides and is allowed to be misunderstood. New documentary from Independent Lens, The Tuba Thieves, grew from a string of tubas stolen from high schools across Southern California between 2011 and 2013. While reporters focused on the thieves, director Alison O'Daniel, who is hard of hearing, was curious about the impact the thefts had on the students and school communities. The film explores how these thefts altered the sounds of the bands, which ultimately led her to question the role of sound itself and what it means to listen.
After the screening, participate in an informative conversation with local subject-matter experts, educators and folks from the d/Deaf and hard of hearing community. Prepare to be captivated by their unique perspective on music, sound and the power it holds. Guests will have the opportunity to engage with drums and feel sound vibrations through balloons. Don't miss out on this thought-provoking and engaging in-person event!

More about the film:
What is the role of sound and what does it mean to listen? Hard of hearing filmmaker Alison O’Daniel uses a series of tuba thefts in several Los Angeles high schools as a jumping-off point to explore these questions. Through several d/Deaf people telling stories in a unique game of telephone, the central mystery of The Tuba Thieves isn’t about theft of instruments, it’s about the nature of sound itself.
The Tuba Thieves premieres on Independent Lens on Monday, May 20 at 10 PM on PBS North Carolina. Watch or stream online and on the free PBS App.
