In late 2011, a rash of tuba thefts began from high schools across Southern California. Alison O’Daniel was curious about the tuba players, imagining them in class, empty-handed, bored, listening and wondered how the band sounded without its lowest sounding instrument. Before the thefts were even finished, she decided to make a film called The Tuba Thieves. Instead of focusing on the thieves, she used the act of listening as a storyline. The Tuba Thieves radically shifts the use of subtitles and captions by considering them as a third narrative space equal to visuals and sound. O’Daniel won the Best Feature Sound Design Award during the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
The film will have an introduction in English, which will be interpreted in International Sign Language

The film itself will use English Closed Captions.

At the event, the audience will be asked to inflate a balloon to give a sensory experience through vibrations of sound.
