FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:
Attic Salt Theatre Company is thrilled to announce their upcoming production of the classic drama The Thanksgiving Play, by Larissa FastHorse. Attic Salt is coming off their critically-acclaimed and audience-beloved production of Miss Julie and is overjoyed to present this regional premiere at 2002 Riverside Drive in Woodfin. The performances will be held Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:30pm, from November 7th through the 23rd. Tickets cost twenty dollars and can be purchased through Attic Salt Theatre Company’s website, atticsalt.org.
The Thanksgiving Play was written by Larissa FastHorse and made its off-Broadway debut in 2018, before moving to Broadway in 2023 at the Hayes Theater. The production represented the first time a female Native American had a play produced on Broadway. The play was lauded for its biting satire and was nominated for several awards, garnering some for actor D'Arcy Carden, who went on to praise on TV’s The Good Place. Since its premiere, The Thanksgiving Play has become one of the most-produced plays in the country.
The plot of The Thanksgiving Play is an attempt by all-white educators to create a respectful and politically correct Thanksgiving play for students that includes Native American themes. When hiring a Native American actress doesn’t go the way they’d hoped, the cast of four find out the hard way that the complexity of their effort runs deeper than they’d thought. Through its satirical tone, the show humorously delves into the conflict of creating an inclusive portrayal of Thanksgiving without involving any Native Americans. With humor and satire, the play critiques the historical and ongoing misrepresentation of Native Americans by referencing past portrayals involving redface and the inaccurate portrayal of indigenous culture.
The play will be directed by Gabby Bailey, who, as an indigenous person, found herself loving the play at first read. Bailey recently said, “When I go about my day-to-day life and people figure out that I am native, the things they say can almost be guaranteed to come from a short list of misguided responses. It was wonderfully funny to read the ridiculous questions and comments that I get regularly put onto the page in a way I hadn’t seen before.” She added, “I’m excited to showcase to the public an experience that feels very niche, yet in a hilarious and absurd way.”
Bailey has assembled a remarkable cast of some of Asheville’s best and most prolific performers. Christy Montesdeoca stars as the overly-cautious teacher, Logan, and Jon Stockdale is her often-obtuse partner, Jaxton. Additionally, local-favorite Alan Steele stars as Caden, a history teacher who longs to be a playwright, and newcomer Emily Greene is the “ethnically ambiguous” actress Alicia. The proceedings are held together by stage manager Mikhale Sherrill.
All fans of sharply written and well-acted theater should come out to revel in The Thanksgiving Play, a funny and thought-provoking play.
Tickets for The Thanksgiving Play are available now through the Attic Salt Theatre Company website at atticsalt.org.
