The Texas Navy played a vital role in the Texas Revolution and the establishment of the Republic of Texas. It safeguarded the coast, protected vital trade routes, and helped secure independence from Mexico in 1836. In response to the growing threat from Mexican forces, the Texians formed the first Navy to defend their land and people. By 1839, the presence of Mexican vessels off the Texas coast prompted President Lamar to establish a second Navy, despite limited financial resources.
