MAP
This is a route we test out way back in 2018. It's a cracker - a bit shorter than the North to South route but still iconic swims and scenery.
The start is the same - Hampstead at 8am (gather at Gail's bakery) but as this is spring we can, hopefully, run down to the Mixed Pond. Then on to the Mens and Ladies ponds.
From there we head up to Highgate for a quick nod of respect to George Michael's old house. Let's go outside.
Then it's onto a wonderful little secret - the Parkland Walk. A disused railway that connects Highgate to Finsbury Park. It's a lovely mile and half run.
We then run through, round Finsbury Park and the canal to the West Reservoir for a final swim that can be as long or as short as you wan to make it.
There is no support van, this is self supported. It's spring so you should be able to run with all the kit you need for a day out. The run is 3 or 4 miles so not as hards as the Swimmer half marathon.
Swims are skins but you could bring a wetsuit and do longer in the reservoir if you want to carry it in your pack.
Food - there is a cafe at the end but with no support van, it's bring your own sustenance in the form of water and snacks.
Meet is 8am at Gails in Hampstead Tube Station (that's Norther Line tube station).
This year is a new year for the event. We have our local guide John taking it on for us. There will be a few teething troubles about which ponds, pools we can access on Hampstead (there’s work being done on the ponds).
The usual rules apply - this isn’t a race. Expect a colder water but a warm welcome and the customary rough and ready admin you have come to know and love from London’s finest and first cross country swimming event.
And we are restricting numbers to 30 for now to make things manageable.
