On the 1 July 2024 the Aged Care Quality Standards are being strengthened as part of the proposed new Aged Care Act and regulatory model.
About this Event

As nurses within the specialty of aged care we are required to comply with both the Registered Nurses Standards for Practice: “Maintain the capability for practice” as well as a detailed knowledge and understanding of the Aged Care Quality Standards. In 2021, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety recommended that the Department of Health and Aged Care (the Department) review the Standards.

Changes to the Aged care quality standards can place us and our organisation at risk of non-compliance across the new standards.

The reviewed Standards include vital areas such as:

  • Food and nutrition
  • Dementia
  • Governance
  • Clinical care

Target Group: This workshop is targeted to Nurses and Managers in Residential Aged Care and Community Care.

Topics covered:

  • Review and reflect the impact of each of the new standards on our work practice, including those staff to whom we delegate tasks
  • Standard 1 The Person
  • Standard 2 The organisation
  • Standard 3 The care and services
  • Standard 4 The environment
  • Standard 5 Clinical care
  • Standard 6 Food and Nutrition
  • The residential community

Opportunities for reflection of practice:

  • Review and identify challenges in encouraging choice, risk and enablement of the older person.
  • Review challenges and responses in in identifying and responding to changes older person’s physical, psychological and social wellbeing.
  • Common risk-taking activities and effective management strategies to manage changes in a older person.
  • Improving skills in communication and managing a team approach to delivery of care.
  • How to undertake an effective consultation process and appropriate documentation.
  • How to ensure Open disclosure is incorporated into the delivery of care.
  • Assessing your practice against your Professional standards and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissions standards.
