From Nelson to the Skies: The Incredible Story of WWII Pilot Jim Hayter Join us for a fascinating talk by retired UK physics teacher and lifelong aviation enthusiast, Geoff Piper, who has spent years researching the extraordinary life of Nelson College Old Boy, Jim Hayter DFC and Bar. Jim was at Nelson College from 1928-34.
A decorated WWII pilot, Jim flew for the RAF throughout the war, surviving 19 near-death experiences — from crash landings and shoot-outs to a dramatic escape from the German army. His remarkable journey even brought him down over the speaker's own hometown in England. Blending deep research, rare images, and a touch of humour, this illustrated presentation brings to life the courage, resilience, and Kiwi spirit of a true war hero. There is also a display on Jim Hayter at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.
Whether you're a history buff, an aviation enthusiast, or simply curious about the incredible stories hidden in our College's past, this is an event not to be missed.
