The Story of China: The Past and Present of the Yongle Palace Murals
Time: 7.00 PM - 9.00 PM
Location: Meers Hall, Naala Badu Building, Art Gallery of New South Wales
Speakers: Zhang Qing, Tang Jiayu

Organised by Yongle Palace Mural Protection Research Institute and Beijing Culture Pieces Culture Development Co.,Ltd.

The completion of the mural Chaoyuan tu (Paying Homage to the Supreme Deities) at Yongle Palace in 1325 marked the peak of Chinese mural artistry. Yongle Palace is the only surviving intact Yuan Dynasty official architectural complex in China. Its murals, covering more than 1,000 square meters in total, include Chaoyuan tu, celebrated as an “Oriental Art Gallery” and hailed, together with the Dunhuang murals, as one of the two great treasures of Asian religious art.

This lecture will be presented in two parts.

The first part highlights the artistic characteristics and historical value of the Yongle Palace murals, revealing their reflection of social institutions, clothing culture, and the profound influence of Daoist thought on Chinese civilisation.

The second part focuses on the practical application of AI digital restoration of the Yongle Palace murals, exploring technological innovations in cultural heritage conservation, new pathways for heritage transmission, and the promotion of international exchange and cooperation in cultural relics preservation.
