Formed in 2018 in Southern Illinois, The Stifftones are a real-life rock and roll story, a husband-and-wife duo on a "rock and roll devival mission." What began as a modern-day "Goonies adventure" has evolved into a full-time journey, with Shaun and Rachel Stief logging over 180,000 miles and performing hundreds of shows across the United States. Since 2021, they've been traveling and living in their 1996 Cadillac hearse, affectionately named Tania, along with their two dogs.
Hailing from the heartland, the duo's sound is a unique and dynamic fusion of influences. Their music embodies a mix of Midwest meets Bakersfield country, Inland Empire-inspired punk, and a dash of East Coast flair, all wrapped in good old rock and roll. The Stifftones captivate audiences with their compelling vocal harmonies and intricate guitar weaves. If Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones had a love child, they may have been named The MacTones; we call them The Stifftones.
On September 21, 2025, we released our debut album, Existentialism on Main St. Folie à Deux, recorded all over the USA and even internationally, in a woodshed in New Hampshire, a cave in South Dakota, an attic in Illinois, a garage in Southern California, a study in Portland, OR, a home studio in Stockholm, Sweden, and even the hearse. Track 9, The La La Song (Words of Wisdom) was recorded live at the Berkeley Cafe (original location) in Raleigh, NC. The album features the musical talents of a few of our friends and musical heroes, such as Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven, The Third Mind, Monks of Doom, Cracker), Jonathan Segel (Camper Van Beethoven, Øresund Space Collective, Sparklehorse), and Kyle Mayer (September Mourning). Track 10, Father Winter, was written by Johnny Hickman (Cracker).
