Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin is without doubt one of the finest singers to spring from the bustling streets of Dublin in the past decade. His powerful vocals pay tribute to our proud sean-nós tradition, with Ó Ceannabháin citing greats Sorcha Ní Ghuairim, Seán Mac Dhonncha, Colm Ó Caoidheáin as well as his Connemara born-and-bred father Peadar as major influences on his singing style.
A multi-instrumentalist, Gaeilgeoir and wordsmith, Ó Ceannabháin’s songs reckon with societal injustice, bigger issues informing smaller ones, people’s lives swirling in and out of harmony with the state of the world around us. He sings (and writes) in both Irish and English. There is an otherworldly, trance-like quality to his performances. His is a voice which seems to evoke the spirit of ancient Ireland, deeply connected to the past, at the same time as casting light into the dark corners of contemporary Irish society.
2024 is the Dublin artist’s year, having won both Best Folk Singer at RTÉ Radio 1’s Folk Awards, and Amhránaí na Bliana / Singer of the Year at TG4’s Gradam Ceoil.
Ó Ceannabháin’s debut album ‘The Deepest Breath’ bowled over critics, with Hot Press giving it 9/10, and the Irish Times writing that the record could be seen as “a companion piece to recent albums by Lankum and John Francis Flynn”.
