Learning how to sew your own slow fashion clothes with Kirsty Máté
About this Event

At The ReDress Hub, we're here to help you on your journey to be more 'circular' with your clothing choices, avoid or reduce the consumption of fast-fashion, and clothing and textile waste.

This series of six workshops, has been specially designed for young beginners to do after school. They have been created to assist you on your circular clothing journey, so you can start to create your own handmade 'slow-fashion' clothes and contribute to the global circular clothing movement.

The wonderful Kirsty Máté (founder of The ReDress Hub) will be your workshop facilitator, guiding you over the six workshops from how to choose fabric, read, mark, and cut out a pattern right through to constructing and finishing a garment for you to proudly wear at the end of the course.

You will have two garment patterns to choose from to learn these basic sewing skills: a lightweight shirt or a 'sloppy joe' (jersey jumper).

This series is being offered on a Tuesday afternoon 4-6pm.

The Slow Fashion Sewing Series includes:

  • Week 1, JULY 30 (2 hrs): Patterns and Fabric (reading a pattern and choosing fabrics)
  • Week 2, AUG 6 (2 hrs): Patterns and Fabric (marking and pinning, cutting out and tacking)
  • Week 3, AUG 13 (2hrs): Construction Fundamentals (stay stitching, facing, understitching)
  • Week 4, AUG 20 (2hrs): Garment Construction (side seams, sleeve insertion)
  • Week 5, AUG 27 (2hrs): Garment Construction & Finishing (side seams, sleeve insertion, hemming and/or casing)
  • Week 6, SEPT 3 (2hrs): Garment Construction & Finishing (side seams, sleeve insertion, hemming and/or casing)

PLEASE NOTE: there may be some tasks we will need you to complete before the workshop of the following week

If you can attend all weeks except one, please get in touch with us as we would like to work with you to see how we can still make this work for you.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for all young beginners in years 7-12 of high-school who know the basics of using a sewing machine and hand stitching.

If you haven't used a sewing machine before, please attend one of our free, Understanding your Sewing Machine workshops we hold regularly. See here for details: Understanding your sewing machine . We also require participants to know how to use a sewing machine and can sew a straight line. We have some single-session beginner sewing workshops to practice skills - see our Beginner Collection for current workshops.

If you have children aged 8+ and not yet in year 7 who are also interested in these workshops, we will be offering a series soon especially for this age group. So please stay tuned to learn when this will be happening.

What do I bring?

All materials (including your pattern) and tools (including sewing machines) are supplied for this workshop except for your fabric, as we're pretty confident you'd like to choose your own style, and matching thread!

Fabric selection:

When you book, we will ask you for your body measurements to ensure we have the correct pattern size for you and so we can let you know the type and how much fabric to purchase to bring to second week of this series.

We recommend purchasing upcycled fabrics where possible. You may like to come to The ReDress Hub before your first workshop where we have a large assortment of fabrics for you to select from and we can assist you in choosing the best for your garment. You will also receive a further 50% discount as a workshop participant for your fabric, on already heavily discounted prices.

Sewing machines:

While The ReDress Hub has perfect sewing machines for your needs, you are also welcome to bring your own sewing machine to use in these workshops if you'd prefer.
