Join acclaimed Chicago historian Sherman 'Dilla' Thomas and artist Jeff Carter for a bus tour of Bronzeville and an artist-led visit to the exhibition Jeff Carter: The Singer Pavilion Project. The exhibition examines the history and legacy of the Singer Pavilion, the last remaining building as part of the Michael Reese Memorial Hospital, through a series of sculptures and artworks across media. The bus tour, led by Dilla, will focus on the history of the neighborhood surrounding the former Michael Reese Memorial Hospital.
Capacity is limited. Tickets are required. Tickets cost $50, with a limited number of discounted tickets for artists.
About Jeff Carter: Jeff Carter (1967, California, USA, he/his) is a multimedia artist living and working in Chicago. Jeff earned his BFA at the University of Colorado, Boulder and his MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Jeff’s practice includes sculpture, kinetics, sound, installation, and digital media. In several recent projects, Jeff has used IKEA products as raw material to reinterpret and recontextualize lost works of Modern sculpture and architecture.
Jeff has exhibited his work in Chicago at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Renaissance Society, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the Hyde Park Art Center. His work has been shown internationally at the Hayward Gallery, London, the Kunsthalle Hamburg, Germany, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, the IKEA Museum, Sweden, and the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork, Ireland. His solo shows include the Chicago Cultural Center and the DePaul Art Museum, Chicago, Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York, and Galeria Valle Orti, Valencia, Spain. His work was reviewed in Art in America and profiled in the 7th edition of Bauhaus Magazine. He is a Professor in The Art School at DePaul University.
About Sherman 'Dilla' Thomas: Chicago historian Dilla, as he is affectionately known, is an Emmy Award-winning modern historian, cultural worker, and brand ambassador. Dilla has been featured on all manner of Chicago media and has also appeared nationally on both The Today Show and The Kelly Clarkson Show. Dilla is a proud lifelong resident of Chicago's South Side.
Through the power of storytelling, Dilla is helping change the narrative, locally and nationally, about Chicago's value to the world. He was named the 2022 Chicago Tourism Ambassador of the Year by Choose Chicago, the tourism agency of the city. His work has been enshrined in the Congressional record at the US House of Representatives. He's received awards and recognition from the American Planning Association, City Club Chicago, and a host of community and faith-based organizations. Dilla is a recipient of the prestigious Chicago Public Library Foundation's 21st Century Award, as well as a Studs Terkel Uplifting Voices recipient. Dilla has been voted the best Chicago Twitter page/best Chicago Instagram page, and best Chicago TikTok page by Chicago Reader magazine on several occasions. He has presented Chicago history lessons and lectures to institutions of higher learning across the globe.
