In this talk, Mark Fitzgibbon from Cape RADD will share insights from the Shyshark Egg Case Project, a citizen science initiative that uses diver observations to study the reproduction and habitat use of South Africa’s endemic shysharks. By documenting egg case locations, condition, and development across False Bay, the project aims to better understand breeding patterns, nursery areas, and potential environmental threats to these often-overlooked catsharks.
Mark will discuss how divers can get involved, contribute valuable data during their dives, and help build a clearer picture of shyshark ecology in our local waters.
About the presenter
Mark Fitzgibbon is a marine biologist, dive instructor, and passionate ocean advocate based in False Bay. He works with Cape RADD (Research And Diver Development), where he combines scientific research with diver education and citizen science. Through his work, Mark trains divers to contribute to meaningful marine research projects that help monitor and protect South Africa’s coastal ecosystems.
Mark’s diving career has taken him from recreational diving to leading scientific expeditions focused on marine biodiversity and conservation. His current project investigates shyshark egg case deposition and development, using diver-led observations to better understand reproductive ecology and habitat use in these endemic catsharks.
Driven by a love for the underwater world and a belief in community-powered science, Mark continues to bridge the gap between research and recreation, inspiring divers to become ocean stewards through Cape RADD’s programs.
