Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Mary Hopper and accompanied by Kathy Christian on piano and organ, the concert will also feature members of the Chicago Gargoyle Brass Ensemble, a prominent group of classically trained musicians that began more than 30 years ago at the University of Chicago. Anchoring the concert will be a performance of Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata”, accompanied by brass and organ.
The balance of the program plays on the image of the shepherd as a biblical symbol of Christ, the shepherds who traveled to Bethlehem to witness His birth, and other Christian depictions of shepherds as faithful and inquisitive wanderers. The program represents several centuries of sacred and contemporary music, dated from the 16th to 21st centuries, and concludes with new twists on familiar holiday tunes.
