Abstract: The Serapeum of Sakkara, a monumental necropolis that once housed the sacred Apis bulls, is one of Ancient Egypt's most intriguing archaeological sites. Rediscovered by French archaeologist Auguste Mariette in 1851, this underground gallery is carved into the limestone bedrock and contains 24 massive sarcophagi, most carved from granite and each weighing about 60 tons. In this talk, Jay Starrs will guide you through the Serapeum’s history, exploring how these colossal sarcophagi might have been carved and transported over 800 kilometers from Aswan, the symbolic significance of the Apis bull, and various theories about the site's dating and construction. While not claiming to be an expert, Jay will share his insights and theories, supported by personal photos from his recent trip. This presentation aims to deepen our understanding of Sakkara's complex history, from the Step Pyramid of Zoser to the Greek and Roman influences on Egyptian religious practices. Join us as we unravel the mysteries of one of Egypt’s most astonishing ancient marvels.
Bio: Jay Starrs has had a lifelong passion for ancient history, particularly the civilizations of Egypt, Rome, and feudal Japan. He recently completed a tour through Egypt with his wife and children, visiting the ancient sites that have captivated both he and his wife's imagination for years. A member of the Supernovas, the Geology Field Club of South Australia, as well as the Nature Foundation and Trees For Life, Jay is deeply interested in the intersection of history, archaeology, and natural science. One of the highlights of his recent trip was the Serapeum of Sakkara, a site known for its massive, enigmatic sarcophagi. Jay brings his enthusiasm for the mysteries of Egypt to his presentations, with a focus on engaging others in the wonders of the ancient world.
