About this Event
Welcome to The SEN Road To 16!
Protecting Their Future
Turning 16 is a significant legal turning point for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, and for the parents and carers who support them.
At 16, the law changes. Parents may lose the automatic right to make decisions about their child’s healthcare, finances, living arrangements, and support, even when that young person remains vulnerable and dependent on others.
This session is designed to help families understand what changes at 16, what decisions may need to be made, and how to plan ahead so young people are protected and supported as they move into adulthood.
What the session will cover
We will explore the key areas of life where decision making becomes critical after 16, including:
- Healthcare and medical decisionsWho can consent to treatment, access medical information, and advocate when things go wrong.
- Benefits and financesWhat changes at 16 and 18, how benefits are managed, and what happens if a young person cannot manage money independently.
- Where they liveHow housing and placement decisions are made, what best interests means in practice, and who has a say.
- Who supports themThe role of parents, professionals, and services once a young person is legally an adult
The session will also cover mental capacity, Court of Protection and deputyship, supported alternatives, common myths, and the risks families face when no legal framework is in place.
