ABOUT THE ARTIST
Since their 2010 self-titled debut, the sisters have crafted songs that untangle the thorniest aspects of life, love, and womanhood. In their new album, Mind, Man, Medicine, their songwriting was transformed by a sense of self-reliance and equanimity, threading
their lyrics into the complexities of motherhood, commitment, compassion, and self- preservation in an endlessly chaotic world. Rogers and Slagle co-produced the album with Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes, St. Paul & the Broken Bones) and John Paul White (formerly of Grammy-winning duo the Civil Wars).
“It felt like the right time for our first foray into production,” says Rogers. The latest in a series of critically lauded releases, the album came to life at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL and Sun Drop Sound in Florence, AL with contributions from Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell and multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell. The album’s title Mind, Man, Medicine - is lifted from a lyric in the bluesy “Same Water:” ‘Mind or man or medicine/I have tried them all,’ which, according to Slagle, encompasses everything The Secret Sisters are trying to say on the record.
“There are still moments of frustration and anger, but there’s also a little more light on this album,” Rogers adds.
“Space,” infuses an element of dreamy psychedelia, while “If the World Was a House” wrestles with a longing for everyone to better care for one another. “Paperweight” showcases the duo’s deep- rooted country sensibilities with galloping rhythms and a bit of Campbell’s exquisite fiddle work. Ray LaMontagne lends his raspy vocals to “In All the Ways” with low-slung, classic R&B grooves.
“In our previous records, there was a feeling that we had something to prove, but now we’re leaning toward a place of peaceful acceptance immersed in the present,” Slagle reflects.
