About this Event
The profusion of office blocks is partly deliberate government policy; invite in dirty money from around the world, build high, and try and kid everyone that 'wealth will trickle down'. It is also very much about the continuing need for capital to accumulate and expand; regardless of human needs.
The reality is that the global Commercial Real Estate sector is in a slow-motion crash, there is a huge overproduction of office space and there is a miserable and increasing housing crisis.
We'll be looking at the history of offices, the technical change from quill pens to computing and AI, the role of financial services and the labour processes involved in large scale construction. And how global offices are part of the development of a global proletariat. We will also trace the hidden history of women workers in offices from the 1850s onwards.
