The election of Abraham Lincoln and ensuing secession crisis shook upstate New York, and for many, portended a violent collision with pro-slavery forces. Splitting dramatically with his former abolitionist allies Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Thurlow W**d urged compromise with the seceding Southern states. “W**d has behaved very badly,” Lydia Mott wrote Stanton in late November of 1860, recommending “yielding to the South so far as to pay them for the Slaves which have escaped.” Betrayed by W**d and the Republican approach to secession, Anthony organized the No Compromise with Slaveholders Tour across upstate New York. From Buffalo to Albany, the abolitionists faced mob violence instigated by prominent citizens.
