Program: "Years before Colorado became a U.S. Territory in 1861, settlers had been claiming land throughout the Pikes Peak region. Until recently, however, most of those original pre-territorial land claim records were thought to have been lost to time. In this presentation we’ll explore the discovery and significance of the historic El Paso Claim Club record books—dating back to the late 1850s—and reveal new information about the activities of some of Old Colorado City’s already-legendary founders."Presenter: Larry Obermesik is a retired IT manager turned historian, with a passion for uncovering Colorado’s early historical records. His research focuses on the earliest land claims settlers made in the Pikes Peak region, and the little-known story of the El Paso Claim Club. Obermesik’s findings have recently been published and are now featured on the Pikes Peak Library District’s Digital Collections website. Obermesik is also the author of “The Lost Gold Rush Journals of Daniel Jenks” and “The Untold Story of the Colorado Gold Rush”.
