The Scribe, written and performed by playwright and actor Jesse Bernstein, returns to the Jewish Theatre of Oklahoma for an exclusive reprise engagement at Oklahoma Shakespeare on January 3 at 8:00 pm and January 4 at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. This riveting one-man show was an audience favorite in a previous season and now offers theatergoers a rare chance to experience Bernstein’s unforgettable storytelling live on stage. Set in ancient Jerusalem under the watchful eyes of Ezra and Nehemiah, The Scribe follows a reluctant scholar charged with a monumental task: to reconcile multiple and conflicting source texts into one coherent Torah that might help save his people. As deadlines loom and pressure mounts, he must grapple with his doubts, confront the complexities of his people’s history, and admit his own surprising nostalgia for the “good-old-days” of exile in Babylon.
The result is a fast-paced, anachronistic, and thought-provoking solo show that blends sharp humor with spiritual and historical inquiry, offering a “maybe true” origin story of how “in the beginning” really began.
