Join the University of West Florida Archaeology Institute, in cooperation with the Historic St. Michael’s Cemetery Foundation, for a hands-on look at how archaeology and preservation come together to care for one of Pensacola’s most significant historic landscapes!This outdoor program will feature live demonstrations of the tools, technologies, and techniques used to document, conserve, and preserve historic cemeteries. Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate directly by helping clean grave markers or assisting with limewashing select historic structures under professional guidance.
What to know before you go:
🪦 This is an outdoor event; please dress for the weather. Close-toed shoes are recommended.
🪦 All work is weather permitting.
🪦 Participants helping with cleaning or limewashing should expect to get wet and dirty.
🪦 Due to Pensacon, parking will be more difficult than usual. We recommend arriving early and, if possible, parking along S. Florida Blanca St. or E. Salamanca St.
🪦 This event is being hosted with Pensacon, but all are welcome (no Pensacon ticket required)! Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Can't join us during the workshop time? No problem! UWF Archaeology Institute staff will be present in the cemetery from Friday, February 20, to Sunday, February 22, during open hours (9:00am-5:00pm). Stop by to explore or learn more about what it takes to care for these incredible outdoor museums.
