Brief History:
Located in Monmouth, Wales, it stands as the oldest working theatre in Wales (Originally the Bell Inn from before 1649).
By 1850, it saw its first use as a theatre, later evolving through roles as a Temperance Hotel, roller skating rink, and early cinema. In 1928, the site was rebuilt as the New Picture House, marking its golden cinema age. Rebranded as the Regal in 1971, it closed in the 1980s before reopening as The Savoy in 1995.
After extensive renovations in 2004, the theatre was saved by local volunteers in 2009, who revitalized it as a hub for live performances and cinema. In 2019, it won Theatre of the Year, highlighting its community-driven success.
The Savoy has a reputation for paranormal activity, attributed to its long and layered history. Staff and visitors have reported strange occurrences, including unexplained footsteps, sudden temperature drops, and ghostly sightings, especially around the stage and backstage areas.
One of the most common reports involves a spectral woman dressed in period clothing, believed to be connected to the building's 19th-century history. Another notable figure is a ghostly man thought to be a former manager or performer from its early theatre days. Some say they've seen shadowy figures in the auditorium or felt an eerie presence while alone in the theatre. These stories have led the Savoy to be considered one of Wales' haunted venues, drawing paranormal enthusiasts and ghost hunters intrigued by its supernatural lore.
