About this Event
Join us for the Ruby Bridges Walk and Math Matters Rally on **Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.** at Holmes Elementary School and Miami Northwestern Senior High School! This event honors Ruby Bridges’ courageous journey and inspires young minds to excel academically and lead positive change in their communities.
November 14th marks **Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day,** a celebration of Ruby Bridges, the first Black child to attend an all-white public school in the United States at William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisana. She was escorted to school by federal marshals due to angry white protestors. Her brave walk to school in 1960 amidst protests became a historic moment in the civil rights movement, symbolizing resilience in the face of adversity. This day is dedicated to promoting dialogue about activism, anti-racism, and anti-bullying, encouraging students to make positive changes in their schools and communities.
Our event begins with a symbolic walk from Holmes Elementary School to Miami Northwestern Senior High School, inviting students, parents, and community members to join in solidarity. After the walk, we’ll host the Math Matters Rally, where students will learn more about Ruby’s story, celebrate top math achievers, and be encouraged to strive for academic excellence. Through the rally, we emphasize the importance of math in opening doors for future opportunities and economic prosperity.
