Meet us at Ojibway Nature Centre on Wednesday, May 8th at 7:00pm! This May monthly meeting will be in partnership with our friends at Pelee Island Bird Observatory. Please welcome our esteemed guest speaker, Rodrigo Ulises López Valdes!

Rodrigo López comes to Canada this spring to tell the story of the Rose-bellied bunting, one of Mexico's most beautiful endemic birds. Confined in an area about the size of Algonquin Park on the isthmus of Tehuantepec, the plight of this tiny blue-and-rose bird, which struggles to survive in habitat threatened by a transoceanic railway, wind farms, and global warming, signals the threat to the tens of millions of birds that migrate twice a year through pinch-points such as Pelee Island and the Mexican Isthmus.

Rodrigo is a tireless promoter of birding, birdwatching, tourism, conservation, and environmental education. For over a decade, he has designed and explored routes for birding in Mexico. He believes that birdwatching tourism is an activity that raises people's awareness about their natural heritage and the need to preserve it for future generations. He is an early proponent of ethical birding and always engages indigenous local guides on his tours. In 2020, Rodrigo founded the Central West Mexico Birding Society to constitute a forum for communication and collaboration between various groups involved in appreciating and conserving birds. He has served on the Board of Directors of Sociedad Audubon de México for the past nine years and he is one of the minds behind Audubon's "Kids and Nature" and "Save a Tree" programs. He is PIBO's partner in Mexico for the Graeme Gibson Prismàticos Project, which distributes donated birding optics to classrooms, field workers, and conservation groups in Guanajuato, Mexico.
