You are invited to The Rocking Chair (Re) Evolution Exhibition from March 28-29 at The Weisman Art Museum (WAM). 333 East River Road on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota. The Rocking Chair (Re) Evolution is the recognition that mothers, in every culture, visibly and invisibly labor to care for children, families and communities 24/7/365.
Mothering is an essential role and job (in and out of the home); caretaking babies, children, the sick, disabled, vulnerable, aging, and actively dying. Mamas and Elder Women deserve REST.
Rocking chairs encourage human bonding between babies and mothers. The smooth, arching motion of a rocking chair can help calm newborns, help them sleep during the night and provide relaxation for mamas.
The Rocking Chair (Re) Evolution includes and uplifts those who mothered, who are now culture bearers and wise women, who are now aging. Rocking also benefits persons who are aging, have physical health challenges, live with disabilities, or need a practice for self soothing and relaxation.
● 24 Multi-diverse, urban and rural, artists of all ages and genders were summoned to paint these unique rocking chairs.
This project was supported by the Inaugural Camille J. Gage Award.
● 24 women (12 new and young mamas and 12 elder and wise women were nominated by their families, friends or a member of your community to receive a rocking chair at the end of the exhibition.
