Travel The Road to Yesterday at SOHS Hanley Farm!On Thursday, July 11, from 5 to 8pm, you’re invited to time travel to the summer of 1876 and explore “The Road to Yesterday” at the Southern Oregon Historical Society’s Hanley Farm. Experience the sights, smells, and sounds of ranch life and meet members of the Hanley family—daughters Ella and Alice, Grandfather Burnett, Mother Martha, Cousin Laura, the wagon helper, cryptically known as “the swamper,” and Mr. Michael Hanley the best-known stockman in the Rogue Valley.
The reenactments evoke life on the farm one year after the new house was completed. The corrals are full of animals and members of the Hanley Family and friends are busy. Women are doing the washing, children are toting water, hired hands are feeding the animals, and the men are readying the big freight wagon to go to” Californy.”
In 1876, the new Hanley home was a showpiece of Jackson County. The Hanley business ranged across the landscape, evidenced in a beautiful, high-wheeled, fully restored Mitchell wagon, a design dating to 1872 and recently donated to the Southern Oregon Historical Society by Hanley descendent, Michael Hanley IV of Jordan Valley.
Enjoy a tour of the Hanley family’s beautiful home led by daughter Alice and her cousin Laura. Join us for a walk into another time! You won’t want to miss this unforgettable experience.
The program is part of a series of FREE SOHS summertime offerings. No Reservations Required. An Adventure Walk will begin every 20 minutes (ten person limit per group). SOHS Hanley Farm is located at 1053 Hanley Road, Central Point. Period hats and bonnets are provided for children to enhance their adventure.
