The week prior to Easter is Christianity’s most solemn week, Holy Week, which follows the narrative of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, his last supper, betrayal, arrest, crucifixion, death, and burial. At the height of church solemnity, this season has inspired some of the most significant choral works in western music. This concert draws on works by different composers to tell the story of Holy Week, including excerpts from Bach’s St John Passion and Handel’s Brockes-Passion and Messiah, along with Bach’s cantata for Palm Sunday, Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, Heinrich Schütz’s Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ on the Cross, and works by Gesualdo, Pergolesi and Vivaldi.
