The RLW: Diffusing the Ticking Time Bomb To Become An Employer of Choice The FE HR Hub Breakfast Club is back shining a light on arguably one of the most thorny issues facing many colleges at the moment.
About this Event

Many colleges were early adopters of the Real Living Wage and have for years continued to show their support for the Real Living Wage. But over recent years, the cumulative impact of high inflation have led to sharp rises in the real living wage rate and this is now placing unprecedented pressure not only on college finances, but also on the integrity and fairness of pay structures. Pay scales are being squeezed, and pay grade differentials eroded. Some colleges are now questioning whether their commitment to the RLW is sustainable, even though they recognise it’s socially and morally the right thing to do.

We are delighted to welcome Vice Principal, Louise Brown FCIPD from Wigan &Leigh College to share the proactive approach they’ve taken over recent years to diffuse the risk and potential impact of what some describe as a “ticking time bomb", and embed a people-centred culture which has led the college to now being recognised as an employer of choice in the sector.

In 2023, Louise won the prestigious Leader of the Year Award at the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter Awards in recognition of her work in driving culture change at the college, resulting in improving staff retention rates, excellent recruitment practices and becoming an employer of choice in the sector. Their commitment to the RLW was central to this. Louise is committed to ensuring staff at Wigan and Leigh College experience excellent employment practices and this includes a pay policy that’s fair, transparent and equitable. Join us to gain insights into different strategies; share your challenges and pain and pick up tips and ideas that you can take away to start building your strategy to diffuse the ticking time bomb.
