ABOUT THE AUTHORS


NEIL BALDWIN is the critically acclaimed author of biographies of William Carlos Williams, Man Ray, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford. He is emeritus professor of theatre & dance at Montclair State University and the author of Martha Graham: When Dance Became Modern.


ANDY BARAGHANI is a food writer and recipe developer who grew up watching a lot of cooking shows on PBS while learning to cook at home under the careful supervision of his mother (and with the help of a footstool). His experiences at Chez Panisse and Estela cemented his love for cooking, and his bold, highly achievable flavors became his signature cooking style during his time as a food editor at Bon Appétit. Andy lives in New York City with his partner—and an extensive mortar and pestle collection. He is the author of The Cook You Want to Be.


JILL BIALOSKY is the author of six acclaimed collections of poetry, three critically acclaimed novels, and two memoirs, including History of a Suicide: My Sister’s Unfinished Life, a New York Times bestseller. Her poems and essays have appeared in The Best American Poetry; The New Yorker; The Atlantic; Harper’s Magazine; O, The Oprah Magazine; The Kenyon Review; Harvard Review; and The Paris Review, among other publications. She is executive editor and vice president at W. W. Norton & Company. Her work has been a finalist for the James Laughlin Award, the Paterson Poetry Prize, and the Books for a Better Life Awards. In 2014, she was honored by the Poetry Society of America for her distinguished contribution to poetry. She lives in New York City. Her latest novel is The Deceptions.


ISOLDE BRIELMAIER is the Deputy Director of the New Museum as well as Guest Curator at the International Center for Photography (ICP) in NYC. Her most recent book is I Am Sparkling.


KENNETH C. DAVIS has lived a life in books. He is the New York Times bestselling author of America’s Hidden History and Don’t Know Much About History, which gave rise to his series of books and audiobooks on a range of subjects, including mythology, the Bible, geography, and the Civil War. Davis’s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Smithsonian magazine, among other publications. He has appeared on national television and radio shows, including CBS This Morning, Today, and NPR. He lives in the West Village of New York City with his wife, Joann Davis, a former editor and writer. His most recent book is Great Short Books: A Year of Reading—Briefly.


ISAAC FITZGERALD appears frequently on The Today Show and is the author of the bestselling children’s book How to Be a Pirate as well as the co-author of Pen & Ink and Knives & Ink (winner of an IACP Award). His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, the Best American Nonrequired Reading, and numerous other publications. He lives in Brooklyn. He is the author of Dirtbag, Massachusetts: A Memoir.


ANDREW GARN is a Fulbright-winning photographer and author of New York Art Deco and New York by Neighborhood.


ALASTAIR GORDON is an award-winning critic and author who has written regularly about architecture and design for many publications, including the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Architectural Digest. He is cofounder and director of Gordon de Vries Studio and author of Island Follies.


BARBARA DE VRIES is a creative director, designer and bookmaker.


JESSE GREEN is the chief theater critic for The New York Times and co-author of Shy: The Alarmingly Outspoken Memoirs of Mary Rodgers.


LEE JAFFE is an artist, photographer, filmmaker, musician, and producer. He is the author of Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossroads.


The winner of a Pulitzer Prize for criticism, MARGO JEFFERSON previously served as book and arts critic for Newsweek and the New York Times. Her most recent book is Constructing a Nervous System.


CLEO LE-TAN is a London born, New York based author who has always loved books. She is the author of A Booklover's Guide to New York.


YIYUN LI is the author of several works of fiction—Must I Go, Where Reasons End, Kinder Than Solitude, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, The Vagrants, and Gold Boy, Emerald Girl—and the memoir Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life. She is the recipient of many awards, including the PEN/Malamud Award, the PEN/Hemingway Award, the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award, a MacArthur Fellowship, and a Windham-Campbell Prize. Her work has also appeared in The New Yorker, A Public Space, The Best American Short Stories, and The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, among other publications. She teaches at Princeton University. Her most recent novel is The Book of Goose.


FERN MALLIS is the award-winning creator of New York Fashion Week, an inspirational public speaker, sought-after consultant, creator, and host of premiere conversation series Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis at New York’s prestigious 92nd Street Y. She is the author of Fashion Icons and Fashion Icons 2.


SIMON MORRISON teaches music history at Princeton University. He is the author of Mirror in the Sky: The Life and Music of Stevie Nicks.


CHARLOTTE MOSS is a designer, author, and philanthropist. She has designed numerous private residences in the United States and abroad, in addition to collections of carpets, furniture, fabrics, china, and enameled jewelry. She has authored ten books, most recently Charlotte Moss Flowers and Home: A Celebration.


Visual artist MARILYN NANCE has produced exceptional photographs of unique moments in the cultural history of the United States and the African Diaspora, and possesses an archive of images of late 20th century African American life. She is the author of Last Day in Lagos.


ALEX PAPACHRISTIDIS founded Manhattan-based Alex Papachristidis Interiors in 1987. Since then, he has established himself as one of the foremost tastemakers in the design world—named to Architectural Digest’s AD100 and lauded for his tabletop business, Everyday Elegance, with partner Lisa McCarthy. His work has been published in such shelter publications as Architectural Digest, Veranda, and Elle Decor. His most recent book is The Elegant Life.


A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, MARK PRINS has received fellowships from the Truman Capote Trust, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference. Previously, he studied literature at Williams College and Exeter College, Oxford. He lives and teaches fiction in Brooklyn, New York. He is the author of The Latinist.


SAM ROBERTS, a 50-year veteran of New York journalism, is an obituaries reporter and formerly the Urban Affairs correspondent at the New York Times. He hosts the New York Times "Close Up," which he inaugurated in 1992, and the podcasts "Only in New York," anthologized in a book of the same name, and "The Caucus." His latest book is The New Yorkers: 31 Remarkable People, 400 Years, and the Untold Biography of the World's Greatest City.


CHRISTOPHER ROTHKO is the son of Mark Rothko and is actively involved in managing his father's legacy. He has helped prepare more than two dozen Rothko exhibitions. He is the co-author of Mark Rothko.


XAVIER F. SALOMON is Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator at The Frick Collection. He is the author of Cocktails with a Curator.


STEPHEN SILLS is an acclaimed interior designer who specializes in transforming interiors into timeless and unique environments for modern living. He is the author of Stephen Sills: A Vision for Design.


KATY TUR is the anchor of MSNBC’s Katy Tur Reports at 2pm ET, and the author of the New York Times bestseller, Unbelievable. Tur is the recipient of a 2017 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. Her most recent book is Rough Draft: A Memoir. She lives in New York City with her family.


ALEX WEBB has published 17 photography books, including The Suffering of Light, a survey book of 30 years of his color photographs. He’s exhibited at museums worldwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art, N.Y., the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. A Magnum Photos member since 1979, his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, and other publications. He has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007. He is the co-author of Waves.


Originally a poet, REBECCA NORRIS WEBB often interweaves her text and photographs in her eight books, most notably with her monograph, My Dakota—an elegy for her brother who died unexpectedly—with a solo exhibition of the work at The Cleveland Museum of Art (2015), among other venues. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, and is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY. She is the co-author of Waves.
