'The Soul of Iron': The Pasts and Futures of Merthyr and Port Talbot
On the eve of the Richard Burton centenary year, as steel at Port Talbot faces a crisis and attempts are made to give the history of the industry in Wales a rightful commemoration at Merthyr Tydfil, Geraint Talfan Davies, Chair of The Cyfarthfa Foundation, traces the historical and cultural significance of the two towns.
Geraint Talfan Davies is a writer and broadcaster who has had a long involvement with public policy and the arts in Wales.
He is the instigator of the current project to develop Cyfarthfa Castle and Park at Merthyr Tydfil. His career has spanned newspapers and broadcasting in both ITV and the BBC. A former Controller of BBC Wales and a past Chairman of Welsh National Opera, the Arts Council of Wales, and Cardiff Bay Arts Trust, he is also the co-founder of the Institute of Welsh Affairs. He is a non-executive director of Severn Screen Ltd. and an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA.

Ar drothwy blwyddyn canmlwyddiant geni Richard Burton, wrth i ddur ym Mhort Talbot wynebu argyfwng ac i ymdrechion i roi coffâd haeddiannol i hanes diwydiant yng Nghymru ym Merthyr Tudful gychwyn dwyn ffrwyth, mae Geraint Talfan Davies, Cadeirydd Sefydliad Cyfarthfa, yn olrhain arwyddocâd y ddwy dref hanesyddol a diwylliannol.
Awdur a darlledwr yw Geraint Talfan Davies sy’n ymwneud â pholisi cyhoeddus a’r celfyddydau yng Nghymru ers blynyddoedd lawer.
Ef yw ysgogydd y prosiect presennol i ddatblygu Castell a Pharc Cyfarthfa ym Merthyr Tudful. Cafodd yrfa ym maes papurau newydd a darlledu gydag ITV a’r BBC. Bu’n Rheolwr BBC Cymru ac yn Gadeirydd Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru, Cyngor y Celfyddydau ac Ymddiriedolaeth Gelfyddydau Bae Caerdydd, a bu hefyd yn un o sylfaenwyr y Sefydliad Materion Cymreig. Mae’n gyfarwyddwr anweithredol gyda Severn Screen Cyf. ac yn Gymrawd Anrhydeddus o Sefydliad Brenhinol Penseiri Prydain.
