Now the time has come for the thulu, a carved tree from Australia, to go home. After 84 years in the collection of MKB, it is returning to Kamilaroi country, where it had once been removed from a ceremonial site. However, the museum is not left with an empty space, cultural custodians of the Kamilaroi have carved a new tree for the museum. Their new tree, a gift to the MKB, will replace the old thulu in the exhibition “Alive – more than human worlds”. In this artist talk, in the presence of Kamilaroi cultural custodians, we will not only take a closer look at the process of the return of the thulu and all the questions that come with it, but also at the process of carving the new tree and reviving again ancient practices. Together we will look into the future where this return and exchange will lead us.With: Gregory Griffiths, Wayne Griffiths, and Brian Martin, representatives of Kamilaroi community, and curator Beatrice Voirol. The talk will be in English.
