From Joven, which sees no oak, and Crianza, with the least required oak aging, to Reserva and Gran Reserva with extended aging requirements, in Rioja it is all about time spent in oak and bottle before release.
Another unique characteristic is the use of American oak barrels and vats, unlike most of Europe which relies heavily on French, Slavonian, or Hungarian oak.
