Join us for "The Radiant Sea, Unveiled: Behind the scenes with author and photographer, Steven Haddock" presentation at the Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.The Radiant Sea is a book which shows undersea life in a way that has rarely, if ever, been seen before. With 200 photographs, it reveals the ways that animals exhibit transparency, pigmentation, iridescence, bioluminescence, and fluorescence. Captions and introductory essays show the science behind these dazzling phenomena, with most of the revelations based on the authors' own research and photography. Many of the animals shown in the book can be found right here in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
In this presentation, one of the co-authors, Steven Haddock, marine biologist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, will take you behind the scenes of making The Radiant Sea. Explore light in the deep through videos, animations, and hands-on demonstrations, and get a copy of this beautiful tome signed by the author!
Program Schedule:
• Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for light refreshments and an option to purchase the highlighted book, "The Radiant Sea," in the center's gift store.
• Presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. with Steven Haddock, MBARI Marine Biologist/Senior Scientist
• Open Q+A and an opportunity to get books signed buy the author from 7:00-8:00 p.m.
No reservations required, seating for the presentation portion of the event is first-come, first-serve and limited. Light refreshments will be served.
