The Midwest Classic Movie Series takes movies from the 1910's to the 1960's that have stood the test of time to be considered classic and puts them where they belong - back on the big screen. The Historic Midwest Theater is the perfect setting to watch these films as it transports you back to the era they were released in. Whether you saw them on one of their original runs or only on TV, make your way to a M.C.M. screening on the 3rd Saturday of the Month.
The Quiet Man
It’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend and the M.C.M. is celebrating with this story set in the heart of Ireland.
Sean Thornton (John Wayne) has traveled from America to Ireland to restart his life by reclaiming his ancestral home near Inishfree. Sean's eye is caught by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara), a beautiful but poor maiden, and younger sister of ill-tempered "Red" Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who Sean manages to upset on arrival. The fiery relationship that forms between Sean and Mary Kate is spurred on by the town “Matchmaker” (Barry Fitzgerald), and derailed by Will, who does not give Mary Kate her dowry. She wants Sean to fight for her but a promise made in the life he left behind prevents him from confronting Red. Will Sean break his vow and fight for his love or will Mary Kate accept him for the quiet man he is? Either way the whole town will come out to witness the result.
Actor John Wayne and Director John Ford are returning to the M.C.M. after their triumphant debut with Stagecoach (1939) with this personal tale by Ford that won 2 Academy Awards.
