"The Promise of Light” is a seasonal choral cabaret that heralds the winter solstice, when the world pauses in darkness before embracing the rebirth of light. Drawing inspiration from the English Lessons and Carols tradition, this ecumenical program weaves together classical and popular music with contemporary prose and poetry to explore themes of light, darkness, hope, and renewal. Curated by Professor Matthew Mehaffey and local actor and University of MN alumnus, Bradley Greenwald.
Featuring choral works by Ola Gjeillo, Eric Whitacre, Taylor Scott Davis, Leroy Anderson and fresh arrangements of songs by Carole King, Dolly Parton, Tom Schmidt, Peter Mayer, The Fleet Foxes, Dar Williams, and many others.
Featured Poets and Writers: Ogden Nash, Sara Teasdale, Amy Gerstler, Margaret Atwood, Robert Frost, Milton Brasher-Cunningham, Joseph Campbell, Mary Oliver, and many others.
