A Statement by Julian Nichols:
As an artist and choreographer, my commitment to promoting inclusivity and representation drives me to create change within society. I am passionate about providing equal visibility to all gender identities in contemporary dance, both in professional and recreational contexts. While the narrative of this particular work is rooted in my own personal experience, I made a conscious decision to collaborate with someone who aligns with my gender identity. It was important for me to create an authentic and meaningful representation by working with an individual who shares a similar lived experience. This choice enhances the integrity of the work and allows for a deeper exploration of the themes related to personal identity and self-expression. By prioritizing this alignment, I aim to create a more resonant and inclusive artistic expression for both myself and the audience. I am actively aware of and considerate towards the queer community throughout my artistic process. By embracing inclusivity, I aim to foster a more diverse and accepting environment in the world of dance.
The Problem
The Problem is a full-length contemporary dance work that delves into the complexities of love, rejection, and societal resistance. The piece explores the relationship between two characters (one real and one ficticious), drawing upon broader societal attitudes towards personal identity and the challenges individuals face when remaining true to themselves.
Throughout the creative process, our aim is to expand upon the initial concept and develop a more nuanced exploration of these universal themes. We will utilize a range of movement techniques and choreography to convey the struggles of personal confinement, emotional entrapment, and the intricate emotions that arise from the interplay of love and rejection.
Our exploration extends beyond the personal narrative to encompass the ways in which societal attitudes contribute to various forms of oppression and marginalization. By portraying these struggles, we aspire to create an environment that fosters empathy, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the human condition.
Through the use of diverse movement styles, we will harness the expressive power of dance to convey the emotional depth and psychological journey of the characters. Working closely together, we will ensure that the choreography authentically reflects the experiences and challenges faced within the narrative. Our goal is to captivate the audience and forge a connection that enables one to witness and resonate with the complexities of the human experience.
Throughout the creative process, we remain mindful of the potential impact of our work, particularly on those who have experienced rejection. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and safe environment that encourages dialogue, reflection, and understanding. By doing so, we hope to inspire audiences to critically examine their own beliefs and contribute to a more accepting and compassionate society.
In conclusion, The Problem is a compelling and thought-provoking dance work that challenges societal attitudes towards personal identity while celebrating the resilience, beauty, and complexity of human emotion. By providing a platform for introspection and dialogue, our aim is to inspire empathy, understanding, and social change.
