While it has long been established that Ch. 19 of ThePrince is a concise summary of Herodian's History after Marcus, the extent of Machiavelli's debt to the reviled historian ("a discount-bin rethorician" according to his staunchest defender) is still to be fully acknowledged - as is the scope, if not the depth, of Herodian's own political philosophy, often mischaracterized as hackneyed "rhetorics".
