Then and now...
From 1895-1949, the Intercollegiate Rowing Association held its annual championship regatta in Poughkeepsie. In the early 20th century, The Regatta became "the greatest one-day sporting event in America" where tens of thousands of spectators would line the shores of the Hudson, boats and yachts would moore along the river, and spectator trains would follow the race.
A large and lovely community boathouse was completed in 2006 and, in 2019, Mid Hudson Rowing Association and Hudson River Rowing Association revived the race on a 3 mile section of the original race course. Today, the entire race can be viewed from The Walkway over the Hudson. Parking is available at the HRRA community boathouse for $5, if viewing on shore is preferred. Regatta merchandise will be available for purchase.
The HRRA community boathouse is home to two rowing clubs and seven scholastic team clubs. If you are interested in taking part in the great rowing tradition of the Hudson Valley, HRRA and Mid Hudson offer various youth and adult competitive and recreational rowing and sculling programs.
