ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Rosa Porto was born on the island of Cuba, where she grew up surrounded by the sweet smell of her mother’s baking with recipes handed down through the generations of her family, originally from the Galicia region of Spain. When Rosa and her family arrived in California, they had only the clothes on their backs, Raul Sr.’s strong work ethic, Rosa’s exceptional baking skills, and a dream for a better life. Soon after, Rosa began baking and selling cakes to friends and family that had heard of her fabulous cakes back in Cuba. Within a couple of years, it was not uncommon to see a line of customers picking up cakes from Rosa’s small home. In 1976, Rosa opened her first official storefront, Porto’s Bakery, on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, California. Raul Sr. would help out when not working at another local bakery, and after several years, he was able to join Rosa to continue to grow the business. Rosa’s three children, Beatriz, Raul Jr., and Margarita, helped at the Bakery after school and on weekends. They witnessed their mother’s passion for baking and cooking firsthand, which inspired them to carry on their mother’s legacy. Rosa’s recipes and high standards continue to be carried on by her family, reflecting our mission baking memories for generations to come.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Betty Porto was born in Cuba and migrated with her family to California in 1971. Her mother opened the first Porto’s Bakery location shortly after arriving and Betty and her siblings worked there after school every day, throughout high school and college. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1980 from Cal State LA and received her Master’s degree in Political Science in 1982 from UCLA. Once she graduated, she focused on helping with the expansion of her family’s business and settled into her role as Vice-President and Director of Community Relations. Today, Betty has the pleasure of working alongside hundreds of local organizations such as the Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission, The Boys and Girls Club of Burbank, Giving Children Hope Buena Park, AltaMed, CHLA and the Food Help Program of Downey, just to name a few. Betty is a member of the Glendale Arts-Alex Theatre Advisory Board and the Magnolia Park Merchants Association Board. She works closely with the USC Marshall Family Business school, serving as a guest lecturer for the Entrepreneurial Family Business course.
