THE PLEASURES OF VOICE — Unlike practical nonfiction, literary nonfiction puts emphasis on tone, voice and word choice, and the assumption that the reader is as intelligent as the writer, but without altering facts. And while the subject may not be at the onset be of great interest to the reader, the tone you use may very well change their mind, luring them into reading further, encouraging self-reflexiveness and debate. In this writing workshop, you will listen to and participate with essayist and critic Cher Tan on the wonders of voice in nonfiction, and how to use it to achieve pathos and humour without necessarily leaning on an "I". Participants are encouraged to bring short excerpts of writing they consider compelling in this regard. Participants are also asked to bring a notepad and writing materials.
