Why is this site so significant?

In 1977, trailblazer Helen Oxenham OAM created one of the first women’s shelters in South Australia at Christies Beach. She did this in partnership with her two close friends, Peggy Robinson and Josie Harvey.

An advocate for women’s rights for over 40 years, Helen founded Spirit of Woman in 2015 and conceived ‘The Place of Courage’ – Australia’s first public tribute to the victims and survivors of domestic and family violence.

Ripples across South Australia, include existing sites at Rotary Park, Seaford, St Claire Reserve, and Gawler. Later this year we will be launching sites at Stockland Park, Murray Bridge and Cabra College. These ‘ripple’ sites finally sees her vision and years of campaigning come to fruition.
