The Pinkerton Raid
Slotting at grassroots festivals from Appalachia to the Atlantic Coast, The Pinkerton Raid pushes at the borders of folk, Americana and indie rock to craft a sound for dreamers around a campfire.
Songwriter Jesse James DeConto grew up in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with his dad’s guitar and his mom’s FM radio tuned to Soulsville, the Village, Liverpool and Laurel Canyon. Those inheritances mingle with the foothills-folk and alt-country of his chosen home of Durham, N.C. Critics have heard echoes of disparate influences, from Neil Young and The Band, to Wilco, The White Stripes, Sharon Van Etten and David Bowie.
The Pinkerton Raid has shared stages with Illiterate Light, The Ballroom Thieves, Noah Gundersen, Lowland Hum, and The Collection, whose songwriter David Wimbish produced the band’s fourth full-length album WHERE THE WILDEST SPIRITS FLY with Jeff Crawford at Arbor Ridge Studio.
Back-to-back releases in 2017 & 2018 brought the band from Charleston to Chicago to Brattleboro, Vt., with slots at the Festival for the Eno and Shakori Hills, a session at Daytrotter and critical acclaim from Paste, Popdose, Aquarian Weekly and more. AmericanaUK calls the songs “anthemic.” “You won’t be able to stop humming,” said No Depression.
In 2020-2021, the band has been releasing a series of indie-rock singles. American Songwriter called “Dream the Sun” a “radiant … message of hope.” Glide Magazine said “Rebel Mama Blues” “purrs with the garage rock swagger of The White Stripes and the irritated kick of Cage the Elephant,” while The Big Takover called it “a blast of zeitgeist-capturing political garage-psych … Bowie-meets-Black Keys.”
Topping 100,000 streams on Spotify, “Cinnamon Sweet” is both “thunderous” and “playful,” says Spill Magazine. Released on Feb. 26, “Au Cheval” is “breezy” and “hip-shaking,” according to Floated Mag. These are among a dozen new songs due for release on the band’s fifth full-length album in 2022.
