“The Philadelphia Eleven” screening and discussion in Woodstock on September 15From the filmmakers: “In an act akin to civil disobedience, a group of women and their supporters organize their ordination to become Episcopal priests in 1974. The Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia welcomes them, but change is no small task. The women are harassed, threatened and banned from stepping on church property.
In this feature-length documentary film, we meet the women who challenge the very essence of patriarchy within Christendom and succeed in building a movement that transforms an age-old institution.”
St. Mary’s, Crystal Lake and St. Ann’s, Woodstock will host a screening of “The Philadelphia Eleven” at St. Ann’s (503 W. Jackson St., Woodstock) on Sunday, September 15 at 5 p.m. The screening will be followed by comments from The Rev. Nan Peete.
In 1988, Nan was the first ordained woman to address the worldwide Anglican bishops at the Lambeth Conference, which meets every ten years in Canterbury England. Nan's address to the bishops focused on her experience as a priest and the value of ordained women's voices and presence. And more importantly, she presented a biblical and theological perspective for ordaining women.
Join us on September 15 at 5 p.m.! Registration is requested and a free-will offering will be gathered. Register using the link at the St Ann’s/St Mary’s home page.
