Hailing from Austin, Texas, The Invincible Czars have been “keeping it weird” since 2003, as their tastefully modern silent films soundtracks and dynamic live performances give modern day audiences a context in which to appreciate early cinema, and they have earned accolades from film and music buffs alike. With influences ranging from film composers like Bernard Herrmann and Graham Reynolds to their favorite oddball rockers like Primus and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Invincible Czars create an unforgettable live experience that appeals to audiences of all backgrounds.
Since 2018, the group has operated more like a collective with a rotating cast of players. The 2025 touring roster is:
Phil Davidson – violin, keyboards, percussion
Kevin Sakai – flute, clarinet, bass clarinet
Wes Haynes – keyboards
Josh Robins – guitar, bass guitar, sound effects
Stefan Bosque – drums, percussion, sound effects
7:00pm – 8:45pm: 1st Feature – The Phantom of the Opera (1925, dir. Rupert Julian, 105m incl. intro and outro)
100th Anniversary!
Celebrating the centennial anniversary of this classic horror film, The Invincible Czars will bring their signature blend of eclectic instrumentation, adventurous arrangements and sense of emotional depth to this influential masterpiece of silent cinema. The Czars’ Phantom of the Opera soundtrack is the culmination of nearly a year of meticulous composition, recording, and collaboration. The group drew inspiration from the film’s gothic visuals and haunting narrative to craft a score using their primary instruments: piano, violin, electric guitar/bass, organ, flute, drums and bass clarinet. They create a live experience so immersive that it’s easy to forget the music is being played live at times!
9:45pm – 11:45pm: 2nd Feature – Nosferatu (1922, dir. F.W. Murnau, 120m incl. intro and outro)
Nosferatu has been The Invincible Czars’ most popular silent film score since it debuted in 2015. The show is ear and eye candy for fans of horror movies from all eras! The film is celebrated for its atmospheric cinematography, haunting performances, and enduring influence on the horror genre, and many consider it to be the pinnacle of German Expressionist filmmaking. Fans, theaters and media have praised The Czars’ soundtrack for making the near century-old movie “actually scary” for modern day audiences, using a mix of violin, glockenspiel, organ, flute, bass clarinet, voices and vocals, music box, loops, electric guitar, bass, piano and percussion – all of which play prominent roles in the score and are a sight to behold when performed live by only four or five players!
The Invincible Czars encourage fans and attendees to dress for the Halloween season at these shows!
